PM Modi Trump Press Conference: Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, stated that India had asked the United States not to allow questions during the press conference following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in France.

Gor mentioned that Trump initially agreed to this but then decided to allow questions, and so the event became a 45-minute press conference with Modi there.

Gor gave this account at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum on Saturday.

Gor stated that prior to the meeting, he and Trump had discussed what topics India might raise. He also said that Trump asked whether India had any particular requests.

Gor stated that while the Ministry of External Affairs wished for the media to be there, it did not want the meeting to turn into a proper press conference.

Gor stated that he had told Trump that India wished to avoid direct questions, and Trump initially agreed.

Following the opening remarks, Trump looked directly at the cameras and asked the reporters to put their questions to him.

The result was a discussion that evolved into a 45-minute press conference covering several topics.

The government has not yet given an official reply to Gor's remarks regarding New Delhi's request to avoid being questioned.

The importance of the meeting in June stemmed from the fact that New Delhi and Washington were negotiating a trade agreement and that tensions in West Asia were affecting shipping and energy supplies; Trump also stated that the two countries were 'very close' to reaching a trade deal.

Gor Meeting with Dalai Lama

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who concluded his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Friday, focused on strengthening US-India ties through political meetings and cultural exchanges.

During his three-day tour, Gor visited Srinagar and Leh, met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and explored Ladakh’s culture.

In Srinagar, he described Jammu and Kashmir as “an important part of India,” triggering a diplomatic row with Pakistan, which summoned the US envoy and reiterated its claim that the territory is disputed.

India rejected Pakistan’s response, with the Ministry of External Affairs stating that J&K and Ladakh are “integral and indivisible” parts of India.

Gor also praised Kashmir’s beauty and suggested the US could consider easing its travel advisory, while commending security improvements.

In Ladakh, speculation grew that Gor would meet the Dalai Lama, but the meeting did not take place due to a last-minute schedule change, according to the Central Tibetan Administration. Neither Washington nor Delhi provided details.

The visit was significant as it marked the first visit by a senior US diplomat to Ladakh since the 2020 India-China military standoff. Gor also visited Thiksey Monastery, while his meeting with Omar Abdullah marked the first such meeting between a serving US ambassador and a sitting J&K chief minister in over a decade.
