Donald Trump Says Tariffs On India Will Be Reduced As Part Of a Fair Trade Deal
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to reduce tariffs when questioned about trade negotiations with India.
He again emphasised that India's high tariffs stem from its oil trade with Russia, claiming once again that New Delhi is no longer dealing with Russian oil imports.
Furthermore, he stated that this will encourage a fair trade deal between India and the United States.
Trump’s latest remarks followed his imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian imports in August, citing New Delhi's energy deals with Moscow.
This strategy was a pressure tactic for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the Ukraine war.
The trade talks between India and the US have been ongoing since, and every time, Donald Trump reiterated India's stance on ceasing the Russian oil trade.
India Denies Any Phone Call Between Two Leaders
The first time Trump made such claims of a Russian oil ban by India was in the context of PM Modi's assurance. But India has denied any such interaction between the two leaders.
On being questioned about trade talks on Tuesday, the US president stated about making a deal with India, different from the past.
He remarked they might not like him today, but will admire him later for this fair trade deal. Trump also admitted having unfair trade deals, but is now moving towards better terms.
Pointing to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the President made a repeated claim on moving further with the deal that will yield good results for everybody.
Bessent was among the top US officials who backed Donald Trump in targeting India over its oil trade with Russia. He even criticised India for reaping huge benefits from Russian oil imports even after the Ukraine war.
Trump Backs Sergio Gor To Bolster Strategic Partnership With India

After being confirmed by the Senate as U.S. ambassador to India on October 7, Gor visited New Delhi and discussed trade, defence, technology, and crude minerals with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
