CSK Next Head Coach: Fix Dhoni’s Role Before Hiring an outside Coach, CSK Advised

CSK Next Head Coach: Fix Dhoni’s Role Before Hiring an outside Coach, CSK Advised

CSK Next Head Coach: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), five-time IPL champions, are preparing for a major change in their coaching staff after Stephen Fleming's departure.

Former India batter Kris Srikkanth said he would not pick Eoin Morgan or Brendon McCullum for the role, even though both have been mentioned.

Instead, Srikkanth supports Michael Hussey, who is currently the team's batting coach.

CSK Next Head Coach: CSK Eye Eoin Morgan as Stephen Fleming Steps Down

CSK Head Coach Replacement: Fleming's exit marks the end of one of the most successful coaching periods in IPL history.

The former New Zealand captain led CSK for 18 years and helped them win five IPL titles before he and the team decided to part ways.

With CSK now looking for a new coach, Eoin Morgan has been suggested as a possible option.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who has played for both CSK and India, discussed this on his YouTube channel and said the team was seriously considering Morgan.

CSK Head Coach Candidates: Srikkanth Rejects Morgan and McCullum for CSK Coach, Backs Michael Hussey

CSK Next Head Coach: On his own channel, Srikkanth said he would not choose Morgan as CSK's head coach.

He praised Morgan's achievements as a player and as England's captain but questioned whether Morgan has enough coaching experience.

Srikkanth also mentioned Morgan's time as KKR captain and said he does not think Morgan is the right fit for CSK.

Ashwin also mentioned Brendon McCullum in his video but thought it was unlikely McCullum would take the job.

McCullum is already busy as England's ODI and T20I coach, so taking the CSK job would be difficult while preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

CSK Must Decide Dhoni’s Future Before Hiring New Head Coach, Says Srikkanth

MS Dhoni CSK Future: Srikkanth also said CSK should not pick Brendon McCullum as head coach.

He believes the team should look at options other than Morgan and McCullum to replace Fleming. Srikkanth prefers Michael Hussey for the job.

CSK Next Head Coach: However, he thinks the final decision will largely depend on MS Dhoni's future, since Dhoni remains an important part of CSK's plans, given his level of control and influence within the team.

Dhoni did not play any matches in the IPL 2026 season, so his future with CSK is uncertain.

Srikkanth feels Michael Hussey is a strong candidate and that CSK may not need to look outside the franchise to find Fleming's replacement.

Still, he said the team should first decide on Dhoni's future role before finalising its coaching staff.

Brief About Three Contenders for CSK's Next Head Coach Position

CSK plans to hire a foreign coach. The shortlist will likely feature candidates familiar with the team and experienced in T20 cricket.

1. Mike Hesson

If CSK decides to consider options outside the Super Kings group, Mike Hesson stands out as a strong candidate.

He is known as one of the most experienced and respected T20 coaches, with nearly 20 years of coaching experience.

Hesson has coached teams like New Zealand, Kings XI Punjab, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

He is now the head coach of the Pakistan national team. He has a reputation for building strong teams and is considered a reliable, high-quality choice.

The main issue is that his current international commitments might prevent him from joining the IPL immediately.

Still, his experience matches the type of overseas expert CSK is said to be looking for.

2. Albie Morkel

Albie Morkel is now seen as the leading candidate after being named head coach of the Joburg Super Kings, which is a sister team of the Chennai Super Kings in the SA20.

Some people think this could open the door for him to become the main coach at Chepauk.

Morkel was an all-rounder for South Africa and played a big part in CSK's IPL title wins in 2010 and 2011.

He understands the team's culture and identity. Hiring him would help CSK maintain continuity while bringing in someone who knows the team and can also introduce fresh ideas.

The main concern is his experience. The Joburg role is his first time as a head coach at the senior level.

If CSK picks him, it would be for his potential rather than a long coaching history, but he is well respected within the Super Kings group.

3. Mike Hussey

Mike Hussey is the top internal candidate. He has been CSK's batting coach since 2018 and played for the team for six seasons.

The players already respect him, so promoting him would probably be an easy transition.

Hussey brings extensive coaching experience. He coaches Welsh Fire in The Hundred and was a consultant for England's 2022 T20 World Cup-winning team.

Many in cricket appreciate his leadership and tactical skills.

However, Hussey's future at CSK is unclear, with changes happening in the coaching staff.

Fleming has invited him to join England's coaching team. Whether Hussey stays and steps up or leaves, it will greatly affect CSK's coaching plans.

CSK’s Foreign Coach Gamble: Sound Strategy or High-Stakes Risk?

CSK Next Head Coach: CSK may consider hiring another overseas coach, given Fleming's success with them.

For a team that values stability, sticking with proven methods is important.

Bringing in someone like Morkel or Hussey, who already understands how the Super Kings work, could help things go more smoothly after a difficult season.

Still, picking someone just because they are familiar has its risks. CSK has not won a title in three seasons, so they need more than a safe option.

They need a coach who can bring fresh ideas, refresh the ageing squad, and rethink their strategy.

Whether CSK decides to stay loyal and keep things as they are, or to bring in bold, experienced leadership, this decision will shape not only the coaching search but also the team’s future.
