According to a media report, Rohit Sharma's situation has made things harder for Agarkar. His first term ended in June, and the BCCI then gave him a three-month extension.

Now, the board is reportedly considering its options. Laxman, a former India batter who currently heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, has been mentioned as a possible replacement.

Talks are reportedly ongoing, and a final decision is expected at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting in September.

BCCI Chief Selector: The report also says BCCI officials believe Laxman’s opinions would carry more influence, and that senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would be more open to his advice.

Agarkar could still remain as chief selector despite the recent developments. Since taking over in July 2023, India have played four ICC white-ball finals and won three consecutive titles — the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

VVS Laxman, known as the God of the fourth innings, is considered one of the best middle-order batsmen in cricket history.
Laxman often had to work hard to keep his spot on the Indian national team, but he is remembered for many match-winning performances.
In 2011, he received the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, for his achievements.
In his cricket career, Laxman earned several awards and often played well against the best teams of his time.
Laxman played his first Test match in 1996 against South Africa. Over his 16-year Test career, he scored 8,781 runs in 225 innings.
He made his One-Day International debut in 1998 against Zimbabwe and scored 2,338 runs in 83 ODI innings.
In Tests, he scored 17 centuries and 56 half-centuries, and in ODIs, he made six centuries and 10 half-centuries.
He hit 1,135 boundaries in Tests and 222 in One-Day matches, but he hit surprisingly few sixes.
In Test matches, Laxman hit only five sixes, and in ODIs, he hit four. That means he hit a total of nine sixes in both formats.
In T20 matches, he scored 491 runs at a strike rate of 114.71, with 57 fours and eight sixes.
New Zealand's Brendon McCullum holds the record for most sixes in Test history with 107, while Pakistan's Shahid Afridi leads in ODIs with 351 sixes.
