Brief About Ravichandran Ashwin & His Rise In Cricket

Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin was born on September 17, 1986, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

He is regarded as one of India’s finest all-rounders, known for his right-arm off-spin and right-handed batting.

Ashwin has taken more than 750 international wickets and scored six Test centuries. He was also part of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning team.

Ashwin grew up in Chennai and developed an interest in cricket through his father, Ravichandran, a club cricketer.

He studied at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School. Initially an opening batsman, he switched his focus to off-spin at 18.

Alongside cricket, he completed an Information Technology degree from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering in 2008.

He made his Tamil Nadu debut in 2006 and soon attracted attention through his performances in domestic cricket. His IPL journey started in 2008 with CSK (Chennai Super Kings).

He became a key player in CSK’s 2010 and 2011 title-winning campaigns and gained recognition for his accuracy and variations, including the carrom ball.

Over the years, he represented Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. He stopped playing in the IPL in August 2025.

Ashwin made his international debut in 2010 and was part of India’s 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy and 2015 World Cup campaigns. He later returned to India’s T20I setup for the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups.

In Test cricket, Ashwin established himself as one of the greatest spinners of his generation. He became the first Indian to reach 50 Test wickets in his first home Test against England in 2012.

He has won 11 Test Player of the Series awards, matching Muttiah Muralitharan, and became the first bowler to reach 250, 300 and 350 Test wickets.

Ashwin scored 3,503 Test runs and is among the few cricketers to combine 3,000-plus Test runs with 500-plus wickets. He received the Arjuna Award in 2014 and the Padma Shri in 2024.

His memoir, I Have the Streets: A Kutti Cricket Story, was published in 2024. He retired from international cricket on 18 December 2024 after the Brisbane Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
