Nepal Flash Flood Disaster: On Wednesday, Nepal deployed helicopters to assist rescue efforts after a flash flood hit villages in the Himalayas.

Officials said the flood killed eight people and damaged roads, bridges, and power projects near the Tibet border.

The disaster also affected areas across the border in Tibet, where a mudslide struck a land crossing between China and Nepal.

China’s official news agency reported many casualties and said some people were missing in Gyirong county.

In Nepal, high water levels in Syapru Besi and Timure in Rasuwa district made rescue work hard. About 50,000 people live in the district.

Officials told Reuters that helicopters could not land until the floodwaters went down.

The full extent of the flooding was not known immediately. Last year, a deadly flash flood on the same river was linked to the draining of a glacial lake.

Hydroelectric Projects Damaged

According to Reuters, this is more than 12% of Nepal’s total hydropower capacity of 3.2 gigawatts.

Minister Balendra Shah said police and military personnel were helping rescue and relief teams.

Shah said authorities told officials to move people from low-lying areas to safer places. He also advised people living along the river to stay careful and alert.

A climate monitor said the flood was caused by the draining of a supraglacial lake in Tibet.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, stated that he had spoken to the Prime Minister of Nepal, Balen Shah, following a deadly flash flood which hit certain areas of Nepal; he also promised that India would provide all possible humanitarian aid.

Modi stated that he had spoken to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed his condolences to those who died in the floods in Nepal; he also said that the people of India are supporting Nepal at this difficult time and that India is carrying out close co-operation in the rescue and relief operations.
