Rain Drenches Delhi-NCR as Orange Alert Warns of Temperature Dip
Friday morning began with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of Delhi and the NCR (National Capital Region), resulting in a significant drop in temperatures.
The weather department at 7:30 stated that showers would continue in the capital for the next two hours.
Following it, an orange alert regarding the possibility of thunderstorms and rain in Delhi-NCR and other areas in Punjab and Haryana.
How long will the rain continue in Delhi NCR?
According to the IMD rain forecast for Delhi, the main reason for the Friday showers is the western disturbances influencing the region.
The rains will continue in the afternoon, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, and thunderbolts.
On Thursday, the capital recorded its warmest day in seven years, with a maximum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius.
However, the weather office noted that on Friday, temperatures are more likely to drop to 19 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to fall to around 12 degrees Celsius.
Even though the rain led to marginal improvement in air quality, it still remained in the ‘Very Poor’ category, recording an AQI of 302.
Noida Shows Improvement, But Remains in Poor Category
The air quality in Noida comparatively fared better with AQI at 293, in the ‘poor category’, whereas Gurugram also recorded AQI at 272.
According to the AQWS (Air Quality and Weather Forecasting System), air quality will be moderate on January 23-24. It will then fall to the 'poor' on January 25.
In the meantime, CAQM has rolled back Stage III of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) across Delhi-NCR after observing an improvement in overall air quality. But Stages 1 and 2 will remain in effect.
North India on Alert as Western Disturbance Approaches
On Thursday morning, rain showers lashed parts of Jammu city, intensifying the cold wave across the region. According to the weather department's forecast, rain and snowfall are expected across Uttarakhand, and the department has issued an orange alert for several districts.
Even parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal are witnessing a rise in snowfall.
The other places expected to receive heavy rain and snowfall, as predicted by IMD, are Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Chamoli, and Dehradun.
Due to the possibility of hailstorms and strong winds, a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts.
However, on the positive note, the incoming rainfall will bring much relief from the dry conditions and will prevent the risk of forest fires in the hilly areas.
