Tamil Nadu Governor Latest News: Lok Bhavan Refuses TVK's Invitation to Form Government, Cites Lack of Majority

Lok Bhavan said it did not invite the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government because TVK had not proven it had a majority.

The governor decides who forms the government, while the courts only check for a basic majority. Lok Bhavan’s unclear delay has caused more confusion.

Parties are trying to appear united, but three days after the assembly results, the deadlock remains. The suspense over Tamil Nadu’s next government continues.

Vijay met Arlekar at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday and again on Thursday, but still did not receive an invitation. TVK has 108 seats, and Vijay also has support from five Congress legislators.

“During the meeting, the Hon’ble governor explained that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, essential for forming the government, has not been established,” the governor’s office said.

Tamil Nadu Political Deadlock: Uncertainty in Tamil Nadu as MK Stalin Gains Authority Amid Delayed Decisions

Tamil Nadu Governor Latest News: Tamil Nadu faces an uncertain time. The VCK, CPI, and CPI(M), each with two seats, will announce their decision on Friday.

DMK’s 59 lawmakers have given MK Stalin the authority to act, but Thursday’s closed-door meeting ended without a clear outcome.

As per the party resolution, they won’t proceed with another election, as their key focus is to establish a stable government in Tamil Nadu.

At the same time, we are also forced to consider the need not to give space to communal forces that would undermine the policies of the Dravidian movement.

This meeting unanimously decides to give MK Stalin the power to immediately take urgent decisions.”

Where do parties stand on backing TVK?

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which has 47 seats, seems divided. Some lawmakers support TVK, while others do not.

Party chief E Palaniswami went to a beach resort in Puducherry, where about 40 lawmakers are meeting. Most reportedly want to support TVK’s Vijay, but disagreements remain.

As per PTI report, Palaniswami requested newly elected MLAs to remain patient and united. He also assured them about good things to arrive but till then they need to keep patience at the resort over the next few days.

Vijay’s new party broke a 50-year Dravidian duopoly and became the largest party in the assembly election, winning 108 seats—10 short of a majority in the 234-member House.

With support from five Congress members, he is waiting for more backing from other parties. Vijay contested two seats and won both.

According to TVK leader Nirmal Kumar, as well as the VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), he must resign from one seat within 14 days of the election result notification.

Vijay CM Bid: VCK and Left Parties To Take Their Stand on Friday

“We will decide later. We will convene our high-level committee meeting tomorrow evening. We're waiting for the Left parties' decision, since we have worked together for ten years and agreed to decide jointly,” VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan said.

Both Left parties have called meetings of their state committees on Friday.

The governor was asked by the VCK and the Left parties to welcome Vijay. As reported by reporters, Thirumavalavan accused the BJP, Modi, and Amit Shah of interfering in Tamil Nadu politics and creating confusion.

Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026: What Happens When the Majority Fails?

Tamil Nadu Governor Latest News: When no party has a clear majority, Indian governors often invite the single largest party, as happened in Maharashtra in 2019.

However, there is no law for these situations, so the Constitution and Supreme Court judgments are open to interpretation.

Only the SR Bommai verdict requires a floor test, so the suspense continues until the legislature acts.

Former AG Mukul Rohatgi even termed delaying in Vijay’s swearing in ceremony as unconstitutional. DMK’s Saravanan Annadurai also questioned TVK for its silence on the delay.
